Overview Of The Dr. Marty Brand

Founded by Dr. Martin Goldstein, a veterinarian with 40 years of experience, Dr. Marty’s pet food has one mission: to support pet health. Through freeze-dried formulas made with high-quality ingredients, Dr. Marty’s pet food gives pets more energy, easier digestion, less joint pain, and a shinier coat.

Dr. Marty’s unique vision of animal nutrition derives from a personal experience he had in this early adult life. Overweight and unhealthy, Dr. Marty stumbled across a book on macrobiotic diets and followed the guidelines to lose 20 pounds and transform his health.

He then began incorporating similar principles into his veterinary practice and was amazed at the results.

While Dr. Marty offers a limited selection of products, each recipe is formulated with high-quality ingredients and gently freeze-dried to preserve their nutrition and flavor.

Where Are The Products Made?

Both the packaging for Dr. Marty pet food and the company’s Better Business Bureau profile lists an address in Woodland Hills, California as the company headquarters. We weren’t able to find much more specific information on the product’s manufacture, however.

The only information Dr. Marty provides on the company website about where the products are made is that their formulas are gently freeze-dried in the United States and Canada. Here’s what they have to say about their ingredients: “We receive our ingredients fresh, then gently freeze-dry them so they’re bursting with flavor and nutrients to feed your dog the right way.”

What Dog Food Products Do They Offer?

Dr. Marty offers a limited selection of dog food, cat food, treats, and supplements. When it comes to their dog food products, there is a single freeze-dried formula and three recipes for treats. Dr. Marty’s supplements are formulated for joint health, coat health, immunity, digestion, and longevity.

Is Their Packaging Environmentally Friendly?

Because Dr. Marty’s dog food is freeze-dried and stable and room temperature, it doesn’t require any insulation or special packaging.

My order arrived in a recyclable cardboard box. The food packaging itself appears to be plastic and doesn’t have anything on it to indicate that it is recyclable.

How Much Does It Cost?

You can purchase Dr. Marty’s freeze-dried dog food for $59.95 for a 16-ounce bag. The more you buy, however, the more you save. You’ll save 5% on an order of three bags or 10% on an order of six. Shipping is free on U.S. orders over $50.

Each 16-ounce bag contains about 9 cups of freeze-dried food. For a 30-pound dog, the recommended daily serving is 2 cups, so a bag would only last about 4 ½ days. This makes the weekly price close to $93.

What Did Our Test Dog Think?

To review Dr. Marty’s dog food, I ordered three bags of their only recipe – Nature’s Blend. This freeze-dried dog food features a combination of animal proteins and plant ingredients. It arrived in a resealable plastic bag printed with clear instructions for rehydrating and use as a meal booster or mixer.

As soon as I opened the box of Dr. Marty dog food, my dog Archie was interested – and so were my three cats.

The product has an aroma that seems very appealing to pets, and they all loved the flavor. I offered the food to my dog both dry and rehydrated and he seemed to enjoy both.

While Dr. Marty’s packaging doesn’t appear to be recyclable, I appreciated that it was fairly minimal. I like the resealable design and the package wasn’t excessively large for the amount of food it held.

  • May not be a good choice for dogs with food allergies
To get a better idea what Dr. Marty’s dog food is really like, we’ll need to take a closer look at the ingredients. This recipe starts with four fresh animal proteins: turkey, beef, salmon, and duck. The next three ingredients are organ meats and the majority of the rest of the list is made of up plant ingredients.

Ingredients: Turkey, Beef, Salmon, Duck, Beef Liver, Turkey Liver, Turkey Heart, Flaxseed, Sweet Potato, Egg, Pea Flour, Apple, Blueberry, Carrot, Cranberry, Pumpkin Seed, Spinach, Dried Kelp, Ginger, Salt, Sunflower Seed, Broccoli, Kale, Mixed Tocopherols (natural preservative).

I love that this formula packs so much animal protein and nutrient-rich organ meats into the beginning of the ingredient list. The only concern is that because it contains four different animal proteins, dogs with food allergies might have trouble tolerating this recipe.

While this formula is certainly packed with protein, it does contain a significant number of plant ingredients. In addition to flaxseed and pea flour as supplemental sources of fiber, this formula contains a variety of fruits and vegetables including sweet potato, apple, blueberry, carrot, and cranberry.

One thing worth noting is that because this is a freeze-dried formula, it is best to rehydrate the food before offering it to your dog. This helps ensure that your dog gets the moisture he needs in his diet for optimal hydration.

Overall, this appears to be a protein-rich formula made with a significant number of plant ingredients. The estimated carbohydrate content is around 20% which is a little higher than we’d like to see, but lower than many commercial dry dog foods.

  • Rich in species-appropriate animal protein
  • Low in calories and fat
  • Freeze-dried to preserve nutrition and flavor
  • Product can become crumbly
  • Treat sizes may be irregular
Every dog owner loves to shower their dog with extra love in the form of treats, but too many treats can be a bad thing. Treats that are high in fat and calories can contribute to obesity, setting your dog up for a lifetime of health problems. If you’re looking for a healthy, low-calorie treat we recommend Joey’s Favorite dog treats from Dr. Marty.

These freeze-dried dog treats are made with a single high-quality ingredient: raw salmon. They’re freeze-dried to preserve the nutrition of the raw ingredient and to retain more of its natural flavor.

Full of real salmon flavor and packed with protein, these freeze-dried dog treats are a great way to reward your dog without overfeeding. In addition to plenty of species-appropriate animal protein, these treats are rich in omega-3 fatty acids to support your dog’s mind, joints, and coat.

Because these treats are freeze-dried from raw salmon, the shape and size may be irregular, and the product can become crumbly over time. The benefit is that you can easily break the treats up into smaller pieces to make them appropriate for training.

A healthy immune system is essential for long-term health and wellness in dogs. This Canine Renew supplement from Dr. Marty is formulated to support your dog’s immune system and liver, helping to protect his youth and vitality for years to come.

Because the liver plays a crucial role in over 1,500 essential bodily functions, a healthy liver is important. Some of the signs your dog might benefit from liver support include sluggishness, lethargy, irritability, dry nails, teary eyes, and digestive issues.

This powdered supplement contains ingredients that help the body flush toxins, soothe joint stiffness, boost cognitive function, and relieve skin issues. Because it comes in powder form, dosing is easy. Simply follow the recommendations on the package and add the powder to your dog’s food, dosing according to his body weight.

Though there are plenty of positive reviews for this liver supplement from Dr. Marty on the brand website, we found the product description a little lacking. The full list of ingredients is available, but there is no explanation of how these ingredients provide the benefits they claim to.

Is Dr. Marty Really Worth The Cost?

While Dr. Marty’s freeze-dried dog food is certainly a nutritious choice, it is very expensive. Priced around $3.75 per ounce, this formula could cost you well over $50 per week, even for a fairly small dog. As such, we don’t blame you for asking whether it’s really worth it.

Generally speaking, it’s worth spending a little more to improve the quality of your dog’s diet. Balanced nutrition from whole-food ingredients, especially animal protein, is essential. That being said, you don’t necessarily need to go top-shelf to get it.

We have a hard time justifying such a high price point for this food when you could get something similar (or better) in nutritional quality for cheaper. Even fresh dog food subscriptions and raw food may be cheaper. If you don’t have any budgetary restraints, however, Dr. Marty’s is a great choice.

How Do You Order It?

The best place to buy Dr. Marty’s dog food is directly through the brand’s website. If you prefer to shop in-store, you may be able to find it in independent and specialty pet food stores.

Pros And Cons

Before you make a final decision on Dr. Marty’s dog food, it’s important to consider the benefits and the drawbacks of the brand. Here’s a quick overview on the pros and cons for this brand.

Pros For Dr. Marty’s

  • High-quality animal protein as the main ingredient
  • Gently freeze-dried recipes made with whole-food ingredients
  • Discounts for buying multiple bags (free shipping on orders over $50)
  • All orders come with a 90-day money-back satisfaction guarantee
  • Products are free from chemicals, fillers, and by-products

Cons For Dr. Marty’s

  • Limited product selection
  • Very expensive compared to market average
  • Limited information about sourcing and manufacturing

The Final Word

Dr. Marty’s offers a single recipe for freeze-dried raw dog food made with an assortment of animal proteins, fruits, and vegetables. This formula is designed for balanced nutrition but can also be used as a meal topper or mixer.

Because it is freeze-dried, the fresh ingredients retain more of their flavor and nutritional value, but the product should be rehydrated before feeding.

Overall, Dr. Marty’s offers good quality, but the price may be prohibitive for some dog owners. It’s also worth noting that there’s only a single recipe and, because it contains multiple animal proteins, it may not be the best choice for dogs with food allergies.

If you want to improve the quality of your dog’s diet, Dr. Marty’s is certainly a good choice. That being said, it may be more economical to use this product as a meal topper or mixer rather than a staple diet.
