What To Look For In Bird Feeders For Orioles?

Orioles primarily feed on insects throughout the year, but they feed more on fruits and berries during the summer and fall. These brightly colored birds can be attracted with nectar feeders and will also sometimes eat suet. There are several ways to attract orioles to your yard, and different types of feeders to accommodate different types of food.

Here are some important things to look for in an oriole feeder:

  • Designed for oriole food. Decide what kind of food you want to offer your orioles then select a feeder designed specifically for that type of food.
  • Wider ports and perches. Orioles may not be the largest birds around, but they have fairly large bills, so a wider port will help them feed more easily.
  • Combination style. Because orioles feed on fruits, seeds, and insects, you might want to look for a combination feeder that incorporates a nectar reservoir, platform for insects or jelly, and a spike or hook to hang fresh fruit.
  • Easy to clean. You should be cleaning your bird feeders every two to three days at most, so choose one that has a design that is easy to clean.

Tips For Feeding Orioles

Orioles eat a wide variety of foods, including insects, berries, seeds, and fruit. Sometimes all you have to do to attract orioles to your yard is to hang half an orange from a tree.

If you want to enjoy the company of these brightly colored birds more often, however, you should take the time to choose the right feeder and keep it full with an oriole’s favorite treats.

Here are some simple tips for feeding orioles:

  • Offer your orioles fresh fruit – particularly dark-colored fruit like cherries, mulberries, and dark purple grapes.
  • Hang a nectar feeder in your yard – orioles have a sweet tooth, and they will love feeding from a nectar feeder.
  • Use small amounts of fruit jelly to attract orioles to your nectar feeder or offer it alone on a small platform feeder.
  • Offer live or dried mealworms to attract orioles – just keep in mind other birds (even larger birds like crows) will want them too.

Because orioles have such a varied diet, you might need to try out a couple of different types of feeder to find what the orioles on your area like best. There are nine different types of oriole seen in the United States, so make adjustments as needed.

Final Remarks

Because of their bright color, orioles are a highly desirable backyard bird. These birds tend to spend their time high up in the trees, but the right food can draw them down into your garden. Different bird feeders are designed for different types of bird food, and the oriole will accept a wide variety.

I have used a Kettle Moraine Recycled Single Oriole Orange Fruit Stick Feeder for 2 months but I find it is not comfortable for my oriole. First, it just accommodates 2 kinds of food which often is half of an orange on each side. Second, it is difficult for the oriole to keep balanced. It doesn't come with a chain to hang so despite being cheap, it isn't my next choice.

Hey Michael, you could try this feeder: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00931EV8O/ref=dp_cerb_3 It looks like it has four bowls instead of two but still has the posts for oranges. It also comes with a hanger rather than a loop at the top. Hope you find a solution that works!

I like this design of Birds Choice Flower , although the dish for the grape jelly is a bit small. It is easy to remove, clean, refill and replace, however, so it is not a big deal. Orioles like it. Easy to attach the orange halves as well.

I think Birds Choice SNOF Poly-Recycled is good. There are 2 cups which allow both orioles of my pair feed at the same time. Also, as they switch they food midsummer, I can put jelly in one cup and meal worms in the other. It is very easy to clean, and I am very happy with it.

      Both are great suggestions, thanks!
