Are Carrots Good For Guinea Pigs?

As they are an excellent source of essential nutrients, carrots are very good for cavies. They’re fairly high in sugar though, so you’ll have to be careful not to let your guinea pig eat too many at once.

Do Guinea Pigs Like Carrots?

It’s safe to say that the answer to this question is yes! Guinea pigs absolutely love carrots, happily nibbling whenever they have the opportunity to sink their teeth into this crunchy snack.

How Much Carrot Can A Guinea Pig Eat?

Is there such a thing as “too much” when it comes to carrots for guinea pigs? That’s a definite yes – although your cavy might disagree.

Here’s how much carrot a to feed your guinea pig:

Age Amount
Baby guinea pig None
Adult guinea pig 4-inch section of a medium-sized carrot

Your guinea pig might beg for more, but this is one food you don’t want them to overindulge in. Too much sugar can cause diarrhea and serious digestive upset, so be strict about offering your guinea pig only the correct amount of carrot.

There’s more: You’ll want to take extra care when introducing carrot to your cavy for the very first time. Offer just about an inch of carrot, maybe cut into smaller sections for easier nibbling.

Observe your guinea pig for the next 12 hours, watching carefully for signs of discomfort or diarrhea. If everything is OK, you can give them a little more carrot next time it’s on the menu, gradually working your way to the full amount.

How Often Can A Guinea Pig Eat Carrots?

Your pet might like to eat carrots every day but the truth is that guinea pigs should only have carrots three or four times per week. Don’t feed your cavy carrots on the same day that you offer other sweet snacks unless you provide very tiny portions of each item.

The Correct Diet Is Important

Guinea pigs enjoy a wide variety of grasses and leafy plants as part of their natural diet and it’s safe to say that they’d happily indulge in carrots if they had the opportunity!

At the same time, it’s worth noting that carrots are kind of like candy – a little bit really goes a long way, and carrots shouldn’t replace other healthy items that your guinea pig needs to eat for overall wellbeing.

The cornerstone of your pet’s diet should be high-quality guinea pig pellets fortified with vitamin C. These aren’t terribly exciting but they’ll prevent malnutrition and your guinea pig will enjoy the flavor.

Besides this essential, you should feed your guinea pig the following items:

  • Unlimited amount of fresh hay such as Timothy
  • 1 cup of mixed veggies each day including leafy greens and crunchy vegetables; divide this into two servings
  • Unlimited amount of clean, fresh water; be sure to rinse and refill your guinea pig’s drinking bottle at least once a day.

Finally, let’s talk dental health. Your guinea pig’s teeth grow continuously and you’ll need to make sure that your pet has something to gnaw on at all times.

We recommend hay cubes and apple wood sticks, along with safe guinea pig toys. Chewing is an important natural behavior for your guinea pig’s mental health as well as for preventing overgrown, painful teeth.

I have been given a.guinea pig that has never had hay. Is it safe to start him on it now she is 2 yrs old

    • Kate Barrington

Absolutely! Hay should be the staple of any guinea pig's diet, so it's a great idea to start now. Since she's 2 years old, I'd recommend mostly grass hay like timothy versus alfalfa.
