This is one of the best dwarf hamster cages with excellent ventilation. Its most outstanding feature is that the complete balcony can be attached to an access ramp. The ramp provides the pet with the platform to run up and down. It also gives it the necessary exercise. We like this because of the ease of access and the deep bottom tray.

The deep bottom is secured by the wireframe, and the top wire frame opens easily to allow instant access. Furthermore, this hybrid cage is from durable materials like strong plastic base and durable upper wire frame.

This is one of the most popular options available because of its useful features. It’s pocket-friendly, so it doesn’t burn a hole in the pocket. Furthermore, it’s structurally designed to be a combination of the wire cage with several other plastic components.

We recommend this option because it comes with a food dish, water bottle, an exterior extreme wheel, and two built-in tubes that lead to the upper floor. Also, the upper floor mostly becomes the home of your dwarf hamster.

Types of Dwarf Hamster Cages

Dwarf hamster cages are of many types. These can range from wire, plastic, and aquarium cages. Among these, the most popular types of hamster cages are wire tops and plastic tanks. Each type of dwarf hamster cage comes with its own pros and cons.

The rule of thumb is that the cages should have a plastic bottom. This is because wire bottoms are unsafe as their feet could get stuck between the wires.

  • Plastic Tanks Cage – They often come with all the accessories that make the pet’s first home comfy. Plastic cages are easily expandable and let you add other plastic cage sets too. These cages also have solid plastic walls. Thus, you can put as many bedding materials as you want. Many people prefer plastic cages because they are see-through and you get a clear picture of what the pets are doing. Sadly, you don’t get much ventilation with plastic tanks. The plastic walls aren’t easy to climb as well. Furthermore, the plastic modular cage has inadequate space due to interconnecting tubes.
  • Aquarium Cage – An aquarium cage is great because it has a mesh lid that provides security. It’s made from repurposed fish aquariums or glass tanks. Some aquarium tanks have no lid or roof and some may have covers of the wire material.  However, aquarium cages are made of glass, hence it is a non-chewable option. Also you can put as deep a layer of bedding as possible. Unfortunately, this type of dwarf hamster cage is heavy. Thus, it isn’t ideal when it comes to moving the pet from place to place.
  • Wire Top Cage – Wire top cages with plastic bottoms make a great home. They are distinctively recognized to have a top wire structure with a plastic bottom tray. Furthermore, it’s easy to clean and provides access to your pet. Wire top cages also provide abundant ventilation. However, these tiny little pets love to chew on the bars. The spaces between the bars also make excellent spots through which these animals can push their beddings out of the cage. Don’t forget to keep a watch on these naughty little furry pets.

What Makes a Good Dwarf Hamster Cage?

There are a lot of factors to consider before buying a dwarf hamster cage. You should consider the following factors when you buy a dwarf hamster cage.

  • Good size – Have you ever lived in a cramped space without bumping into anything? Yeah, that is what your dwarf hamster would feel like if its cage is too small. Despite their miniature size, dwarf hamsters love to run, climb and play. Therefore, the actual floor space should be adequate for running. Many sophisticated cages don’t have enough room for your pet and lesser floor space means lesser fun for your active pet.  An ideal dwarf hamster cage should have an average width of 24 inches by 12 inches and must be 12 inches tall. With these measurements, the cage will ensure that the dwarf hamsters are active, playful, and happy. The bigger the cage, the happier the hamster.
  • Bedding space – Hamsters love to dig and are natural burrowers. You should consider buying a cage that has great depth for the cage’s bedding. A cage’s bottom tray should allow you to fill it with at least two inches of hamster bedding. Furthermore, in case you go in for a top wire frame cage, the structure of the cage must be deep enough to reduce the number of beddings that the pet may push out of the cage. The spaces between the wire bars are where the bedding materials can be pushed through.
  • Easy to clean – Cleanliness is the most important thing to keep in mind while choosing the right habitat for your furry friend. Dwarf hamsters often dirty their cages with leftover food, droppings, and urine. The easiest one to clean, however, is the wire cage that comes with a plastic tray. Here, you can simply lift the wire, clean the bedding and wipe the tray. Aquarium cages are difficult to clean because they are made of glass and are heavy. Similarly, a plastic cage with several compartments is messy and takes time to clean-up. Furthermore, if the cage doesn’t have some component that prevents the food from spilling, you are likely to find hamster food spread all over the cage.
  • Cage Accessories - Some cages come with accessories that are to be bought separately. So you need to check stuff like whether the cage comes with interconnecting tubes. With this in mind, you should examine every feature of the cage that you intend to pick for your pet. If you decide on picking an exercise wheel for your dwarf hamster,  then choose one that does not have any cross bars. This is because the pet’s feet can accidentally get stuck in the bars when the wheel spins.
  • Safety – Dwarf hamsters can be experts at opening cage doors, so double-check whether the doors are secure. Furthermore, the spaces between the bars of the hamster cages should be small and reach 0.25 inches to prevent escape attempts and physical injuries. Curious hamsters can easily poke their heads through the spaces if the gaps are bigger. This can be problematic if they get stuck. Furthermore, the entire cage should provide safety against slipping or falling, so examine the floor, tubes, and multiple levels. Consider an extra lock to increase security.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to dwarf hamster cages, you can go with plastic, wire or aquarium. It is important to remember that hamsters love to play and chew. You’ll need a cage that prevents a hamster from chewing the bars and making an escape. Also, place your cage in a secure place that is neither too cold nor too hot.

Exercise is good for your pet, therefore the cage you choose should provide a running wheel or toys to climb on. Tubing additions will help you expand his playing grounds depending on the type of cage. Finally, whichever the cage you go for, ensure that your hamster’s comfort and security is the priority. Don’t fall for fancy components that may not work.

I disagree with a lot of the cages. Most of them have so much room between the bars, thats not suitable for a dwarf hamster. They're tiny. I've had two, my current Harry is a master escape artist and managed to get out of the tiniest gap between bars. Plastic is the way forward with dwarfs.

Hi Bella, thanks for your input! Hamsters can certainly be tricky, especially smaller species. The concern with plastic cages is lack of ventilation but they work very well for some hamsters.

  2. Diana

I agree with Bella above. Some of those cages are not good for hamsters. Especially those dinky plastic ones with the tubes. Hamsters, even the dwarfs need more room than that. I think it’s reckless to advise people on the wrong cages.
