Your search for a great hemp-based choice for your fur babies has led you to one of the newer brands on the pet CBD scene: Heirloom Pet Products. Because all of the choices out there right now for your pets can seem overwhelming at times, my pup and I decided to put this brand’s products to the test for you!
We wrote this honest brand review hoping to save you a little time, and to answer some of your initial questions.
Quick Summary
Heirloom Pet Products is a responsible brand with a science-first approach, which made me feel safe giving their products to my dog. While their Road Trip Stick™ was a smash hit, their hemp-based powdered food toppers were more hit-or-miss, depending on their individual flavor.
The brand scores big points in terms of creativity, offering a product lineup unlike anything I’ve seen before on the pet CBD market. While fast-acting, I felt that their food toppers could have shown longer-term efficacy in my dog.
This ultimately left me questioning the real-life differences between broad spectrum and full spectrum hemp in my pets.
- The Heirloom Pet Products lineup is extremely unique. You won’t run into the same old oils and treats that most pet CBD brands have to offer.
- The Road Trip Stick™ provides a well-timed distraction for your dog, which I imagine being ideal for a stressful event. Its 7mg of hemp proved its relatively long-lasting calming effect on my dog.
- The bacon & cheddar flavor of the Whine Not food topper may entice your otherwise picky eater to gobble up his or her plain chow. It’ll turn meal time into a fun - and then calming - experience.
- The brand's third party lab results are probably the clearest, easiest-to-read that I’ve seen.
- The brand’s ingredients and their partners are GMP- and SQF-certified, and the brand's now a full member of the National Animal Supplement Council.
- Not all of the flavors of powdered food toppers may be equally enticing to your dog.
- Longer-term efficacy, at least with my dog, was slightly lacking when specifically compared to full spectrum hemp products.
- All of Heirloom Pets' products, save for one, are intended solely for dogs, and cannot be used on cats.

Why You Can Trust This Review
First, we don’t have a paid partnership with Heirloom Pet Products. We’re not being paid by the brand to review any of their products here, so you can rest assured that all of the opinions you’re about to read are entirely our own. This frees us up to focus on what we really care about: our little furballs, and yours.
Our team at We’re All About Pets is made up of dedicated pet parents who have spent countless hours researching and testing food, treats, and products meant just for our four-legged friends. We’ve written hundreds of articles intended to improve the lives of all of our fur babies.
How We Tested
Unlike most CBD testing periods, my cats did not get to join in this time. Heirloom Pet Products does have one product that’s made for both cats and dogs: their Paws & Reflect beef and sweet potato essence bone broth. All of their other products are just for pooches.
Moses got to start with the brand’s Road Trip Stick™. The next day, we began working our way through all three flavors of flavored powder food toppers. One-to-two times a day, I sprinkled one of the powders on top of Moses’ dry kibble. I used each powder 3 days in-a-row before moving onto the next one, to give each one a fair shot.
Each of the products we tested replaced Moses’ daily combination of hemp oil and one hemp biscuit. I kept a close eye on him and noted how he reacted to each product.
Overview Of The Heirloom Pet Products Brand
In 2019, Jason Lysak and Brandi DeLancey co-founded Heirloom Pet Products, a company based in Richmond, Virginia. These two proud pet parents saw an open opportunity within the fast-growing pet CBD market to offer products that would speed-up hemp’s effect in dogs and cats. To this end, they turned to science, first.
Combining a background in science and technology with plenty of research, DeLancey and current CEO Lysak concluded that their answer to faster and more complete CBD absorption lay in water-soluble hemp. Because dogs and cats (and humans, too) are made up of mostly water, they deduced that a dog, for example, will absorb roughly 90% of an administered dose of their water-soluble hemp.
The Heirloom Pet Products website further describes their lineup as vegan, all-natural, organic, and USDA-certified. The brand’s ingredients are GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)- and SQF (Safe Quality Food)-certified, and the brand is now a full member of the National Animal Supplement Council.
Our Road Trip Stick™ Bacon Flavor Review

How to Use:
Directions for Use: Give 1 stick up to twice per day, as needed.
Ingredients:
Active Ingredients per stick (80g):
Broad Spectrum Hemp……….7mg
Inactive Ingredients:
Pea flour, Pea starch, sugar, glycerin, chicken meal, poultry fat, gelatin, monoglycerides, powdered cellulose, citric acid (preservative), potassium sorbate (preservative), natural bacon flavor, caramel color
The Road Trip Stick™ is also grain-free.
Dosing & Safety:
These single-use sticks are specifically intended for dogs weighing 25lbs or more. While my Moses is only 15lbs, he has been cleared by a veterinarian to ingest more than the 7mg of hemp that each stick contains, per day. This being said, if you wish to treat your own less-than-25-pound pup to a Road Trip Stick™, you may want to run the hemp dosage – and the decently large size of each stick – by your vet.
The label cautions that this stick has not yet been proven safe for use in pregnant or breeding dogs. It also advises pet parents to give the stick to your dog either during or after he or she has eaten.
As a big proponent of responsible pet CBD administration, I was happy to see a disclaimer on the stick’s packaging encouraging a veterinary examination prior to feeding.
Experience Summary
Moses experiences “situational anxiety” seemingly constantly, so I found no need to wait for a special event to give him his first Road Trip Stick™. The Heirloom Pets’ website points to “thunderstorms, fireworks, car trips, vet appointments, house guests, etc…” as ideal occasions for which to give your four-legged-friend one of these chews.
I was worried at first that the stick would be too big for his mouth! His handful of pulled front teeth (he’s a senior dog, going on 12) worried me as well. Even though the stick didn’t feel particularly dry or overly hard to me, I didn’t know if Moses could successfully (or comfortably) chew through it. If he could, I thought, one stick would probably last him days, due to its size.
This dog chew proved me wrong on all counts. Moses immediately treated his stick like any normal, small-sized rawhide. He kept it clenched in his jaws and fiercely protected it from our cats. More amazingly, he ate the entire thing in one evening.
Moses clearly enjoyed the bacon flavor, and the hemp in the stick seemed to prove effective; he slept very soundly and still seemed relatively relaxed the following day.
Our Ruff And Ready Chicken & Tumeric Flavored Powder For Dogs Review

How to Use:
Directions for Use (up to 2 times per day):
Can be given during or after meal time. Shake well before using! For dog weight:
- 1-25lb: use ½ tsp
- 26-50lb: use 1 tsp
- 51-75lb: use 1½ tsp
- 76-100lb: use 2 tsp
- 101-125lb: use 2½ tsp
- 126lb+: who walks whom?!
Ingredients:
Active Ingredients per 1/2 tsp (2.24g):
Broad Spectrum Hemp……….5mg
Inactive Ingredients:
Potato Flour, Chicken, Potato Starch, Citric Acid, Turmeric
Dosing & Safety:
Each bag of powdered food topper comes with its own tiny, recyclable measuring scoop. (Only after dusting off my own kitchen measuring spoons could I confirm that each of these scoops holds 1/2 tsp, as this isn’t labeled clearly on the packaging, or on the scoop itself). The scoop made following the weight dosing chart very easy.
The powder’s packaging carries the same warnings as the Road Trip Stick™ in regards to pregnant and breeding animals, and this product, too, is for dogs only. Like the stick, this food topper should be administered either while your dog is eating or after he or she has eaten. This particular warning goes on this time, however, to explain that the powder may be a gastrointestinal irritant and shouldn’t be given “in high doses” with anticoagulant drugs or to patients with stomach ulcers.
The packaging, again, wisely advises pet parents to have their dog undergo a vet exam before starting this hemp product
Experience Summary
I sprinkled one scoop-full (1/2 tsp) of the chicken & turmeric flavored powder on top of Moses’ dry food and led him to his bowl. On the first day, he seemed intrigued by the newness of his ordinarily plain kibble, and he ate a little bit more of his now powder-covered food than usual. The novelty seemed to wear off quickly, though, and by the second day, he was already back to his usual grazing. It seemed to me that this flavor, at least, wasn’t particularly enticing for him.
Judging primarily by his first day with the Ruff and Ready food topper, the hemp did seem to act quickly enough – he was relaxed and falling asleep within minutes after eating. These calming effects didn’t seem to last very long, though; he was more anxious during his subsequent days on this broad spectrum powder than he normally is while taking full spectrum CBD oil every day. However, I initially chalked this up to him simply not eating enough of this first food topper. I reasoned that he just wasn’t ingesting as much CBD per day as usual.
I scanned the QR code on this product’s packaging and was very pleased with what came up. The third party lab results were probably the clearest, easiest-to-read, and most well-presented ones I’ve seen to date for a pet CBD product.

- 101-125lb: use 2½ tsp

Ingredients:
Active Ingredients per 1/2 tsp (1.96g):
Broad Spectrum Hemp……….5mg
Inactive Ingredients:
Potato Flour, Bacon, Potato Starch, Cheese Powder (Pasteurized Milk, Cultures, Salt, Enzymes, Annato Extract), Bacon Fat, Citric Acid
Dosing & Safety:
The packaging for the Whine Not powder features the exact same dog weight dosing chart and all of the same safety warnings as the Ruff and Ready packaging does, except for the one about not administering it in high doses with anticoagulant drugs or to patients with stomach ulcers.
I noticed a claim on the front of the Whine Not bag that this powder, “Helps to maintain a normal and relaxed disposition.” The claim struck me as more vague and likely much more difficult (if not impossible) to conclusively prove than the claims made on the Ruff and Ready bag, that it “Enhances bone and joint health” and “Helps to maintain a normal inflammatory response.” The latter claims struck me as more medical in nature, and I was actually very surprised not to see the usual warning that I’m so used to finding on pet CBD products: “These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.”
This warning is present on the Heirloom Pet Products website, but I believe it’s important to include this disclaimer on a hemp-based product’s packaging, as well.
As I continue to note: the FDA still has not – at the time of this writing – approved CBD for use in any animal.
Experience Summary
I figured the Whine Not food topper would be a bigger hit with Moses than the Ruff and Ready one, based purely on its bacon & cheddar flavor. Moses proved me right; he gobbled down most of the powdered pieces of his kibble whenever I added this food topper.
Since Moses was finally eating about two full servings of this powder per day, it brought his daily intake of this water-soluble Broad Spectrum Hemp to 10mg. This more closely equated to the daily total of Full Spectrum Hemp he was ingesting before the Heirloom trial week, which allowed for better comparison.
While the calming effects of the powder did seem noticeable within minutes, they simply did not seem to last as long as Moses’ various Full Spectrum CBD oils, tinctures, and treats. Furthermore, I didn’t notice the improved agility or motility I often did with full spectrum hemp products. I wish that I could say conclusively why this is.

Active Ingredients per 1/2 tsp (2.33g):
Broad Spectrum Hemp……….5mg
Inactive Ingredients:
Potato Flour, Peanut Butter, Potato Starch, Banana Powder, Rice Flour, Citric Acid
Dosing & Safety:
The packaging for the Zen Puppy powder features the exact same dog weight dosing chart and all of the same safety warnings as the Whine Not packaging does.
The claim made on the front of the Zen Puppy bag is that the powder, “Helps to maintain a normal and relaxed disposition.”
Experience Summary:
Moses took to this peanut butter and banana flavor moderately. It drew him to his kibble slightly more than if the kibble had been plain, but wasn’t the hit that Whine Not’s bacon & cheddar flavor had been.
During the days Moses was on the Zen Puppy powder, it would be fair to say that he was again not ingesting quite as many cannabinoids as usual, because he was not as drawn to the powder’s flavor. So, I once again must defer to his experiences on the Road Trip Stick™ and the Whine Not powder to get the best idea of how the hemp affected him.
I’m curious as to why the Road Trip Stick™ seemed to work its magic longer-term on my dog than any of food toppers. I also want to understand more about my perceived difference in efficacy between these products and others we’ve tried.
The difference between full spectrum hemp and broad spectrum hemp really comes down to the fact that any trace amounts of THC (under 0.3%, by law) present in the former are then extracted – completely – to create the latter. So, our Heirloom Pet Products trial has left me with this question: do trace amounts of THC play any significant role in improving the efficacy of a hemp-based product?
This will be a question, ultimately, for science.
Is Heirloom Pet Products a Good Choice?
I found Heirloom Pet Products to be a good choice for my dog – particularly their Road Trip Stick™, which I actively intend to order again. The brand as a whole is responsibly certified, regulated, and transparent, which is always the right path to choose for the pets you love so much.
I believe that Heirloom Pet Products could even go from a “good” choice to “great” one if they explored more enticing flavors, like their bacon & cheddar, as well as the possibility of trying out full spectrum hemp (although this may simply amount to a personal preference).
Ultimately, it’s up to you to weigh the pros and cons for yourself, do your research, and decide what you think is best for your own fluffy one.
