How We Review Cat Food Brands

All cats need to eat, but all cat foods are not created equal. Pet food is marketed and manufactured differently than human food, so you need to be careful what you buy. Just because the product has a pretty picture on it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good.

Unfortunately, it can be challenging to weed out the good from the bad when it comes to pet food. That’s where we come in.

We don’t expect you to be experts in reading pet food labels – that’s our job! We’re here to give you an objective background on the top brands and an in-depth look at some of their products to help you understand whether the brand is worth your consideration. We don’t put our stamp of approval on anything we wouldn’t be happy to feed our own cats.

When evaluating cat food brands, we keep your cat’s nutritional needs at the forefront. Cats are obligate carnivores by nature, so meat is the most important thing in their diet.

Here are some of the things we look for in a good cat food brand:

  • High-quality animal protein as the first ingredient
  • Rich in healthy animal fats (ex: chicken fat or salmon oil)
  • Few to no carbohydrate ingredients (especially within the top 5)
  • Limited number of main ingredients plus supplements
  • No low-quality fillers, grains, or by-products

In addition to making sure any cat food brand we recommend is made with high-quality ingredients, we evaluate several other factors as well. We prefer brands that offer a wide variety of recipes and those that provide plenty of information about their ingredients and products. We also consider pricing and recalls as well as the availability of the brand as a whole.

Overview of the Weruva Brand

The Weruva company was founded in 2006 and has remained family-owned. This brand only offers wet food products for cats and they are made in Thailand. Though that might cause you to raise an eyebrow, Weruva promises that their close partnerships with producers in Thailand enable the company to adhere to stringent manufacturing standards.

When it comes to their products, Weruva describes them a little differently than some pet food companies. They use the term “Weruva Grade.” Here’s what it means:

“It means we feed your precious pets like we feed ourselves and our pets: with dishes made by hand, with ingredients and cuts you recognize when you see them, with recipes dialed-in for feline- and canine-specific dietary needs, and crafted in accordance with the strictest standards.”

Weruva makes the following promises of their products: Weruva family owned, real ingredients you can see in every recipe, and BRC certification.

All Weruva cat foods share these qualities:

  • Real ingredients you can see in every recipe
  • Protein provides the majority of calories
  • Hydration-focused foods (cans and pouches)
  • High palatability through ingredients and textures
  • Complete and balanced meals for adult pets

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is a leading global brand and consumer protection organization. They provide the framework to maintain product safety, quality, integrity, and legality as well as operational controls for these criteria for both human grade and pet food. Though the BRC standard may have started in the UK, it is now recognized as a global standard.

At Weruva, everything is about pets. This company wants your pet to be happy and healthy, so they don’t settle for anything but the best with their ingredients or their products.

What Kind of Cat Food Products Do They Offer?

What makes Weruva unique from other pet food brands is that they are solely dedicated to wet food products. You’ll find a wide variety of product choices (over 100 products on Chewy), most of which are available in both cans and pouches.

Weruva offers the following product lines:

  • Weruva Classic Cat
  • Weruva Cat Pates
  • Weruva Cat Stew!
  • Cats in the Kitchen
  • Slice N’ Serve Pate
  • Best Feline Friends BFF Originals
  • BFF Oh My Gravy (OMG)
  • BFF Play (Pate Lovers, Aw Yeah!)
  • TruLuxe

In addition to their canned foods and pouches, Weruva offers Pumpkin Patch Up pouches as a fiber supplement as well as a low-dust, clay-free, clumpable cat litter made from green tea.

Product Recall History

Every cat owner wants what’s best for their furry friend, especially when it comes to their diet. After all, the quality of your cat’s diet is directly linked to his health and wellness.

It can be difficult to judge the quality of a pet food brand based on what you read on the package. You can learn a lot from the guaranteed analysis and list of ingredients, but it’s also important to take into count factors like sourcing and manufacturing. This is where the product recall history comes in.

A product recall happens when there’s a problem with the product and it needs to be removed from sale. This can happen when there’s a formulation issue, contamination of an ingredient, or if there’s a simple product with the packaging. Recalls can be issued voluntarily by the company or by the FDA, usually in response to product testing or customer complaints.

Just because a brand has a recall or two doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad brand, but a long list of recalls should always be a red flag.

Though Weruva has never been recalled, the company’s Best Feline Friends (BFF) had a recall in 2017 related to low thiamine levels. This particular recall was linked to a run of products manufactured in Australia by a facility that doesn’t make any other Weruva products.

Easily one of Weruva’s most popular recipes, this formula has over 500 ratings on Chewy alone. This recipe features boneless, skinless chicken breast as the main ingredient and a single source of quality animal protein. In fact, it is one of only a few main ingredients aside from supplements.

With fresh chicken for protein and chicken broth for moisture, this recipe isn’t short on flavor. Potato starch is the only added carbohydrate, likely used in combination with the xanthan gum to thicken the gravy. The only other main ingredient is sunflower seed oil.

This canned food contains 85% moisture which is high even for a canned food. The estimated carbohydrate content is under 2%. Overall, we’re very happy with this recipe. The only room for improvement is potentially uses an animal source of fat in place of or supplemental to the sunflower seed oil.

The TrueLuxe line is one of the newer additions to the Weruva lineup, formulated for higher than ever meat inclusions to satisfy carnivorous cravings. This particular recipe is made with a broth-based recipe which is great for picky eaters and is loaded with moisture.

The first ingredient in this recipe is fish broth which isn’t surprising – neither is it a problem. The main ingredient is salmon, another single source of animal protein.

Aside from the fish broth and salmon, the only significant ingredient is sunflower seed oil. In this case, we don’t mind the use of this plant-based oil as much because it is rich in omega-6s which may help balance the omega-3 content of the salmon. Fish oil is included as well.

Again, guar gum and xanthan gum act as thickeners. The estimated carbohydrate content of this recipe is again very low, under 2%.

In contrast to the first two recipes reviewed, this formula comes in a 3-ounce pouch rather than a can. Weruva offers many of their recipes in pouches which have a higher moisture content than the cans.

This particular recipe features tuna and salmon as the main ingredients (though they come after tuna broth as the first ingredient). This makes the recipe rich with protein and healthy fats, but it isn’t a single-source protein recipe for those cat owners who are concerned. It is, however, made only with fish so it is free from other common proteins like chicken and beef.

With salmon and tuna as the main ingredients, this recipe is full of omega-3 fatty acids. That’s why we’re not surprised to see the sunflower oil back again. This recipe uses tapioca starch, however, in place of the guar gum and xanthan gum from previous recipes.

The B.F.F. Play line of products is full of pate recipes for cats who have trouble chewing or who simply prefer the texture. This particular recipe features chicken and turkey as the main ingredients.

Fresh chicken is the first ingredient in this formula, followed by chicken broth and fresh turkey. Dried egg provides a supplemental source of protein. Again, this isn’t a single-source protein recipe, but it is entirely poultry-based which is a good option for cats sensitive or allergic to fish.

This formula contains no added carbohydrates other than the guar gum and locust bean gum used as thickeners. The estimated carbohydrate content is around 2%.

One thing we’ll note is that the fat content of this recipe is significantly higher than the previous formulas reviewed. The moisture level is a little bit lower, so that skews the numbers a bit. It may, however, be due to the fact that the recipe is a pate rather than a gravy or broth – it is a little bit more concentrated than the other recipes.

The Slide N’ Serve line of products from Weruva is similar to a pate, but it has been pureed into a creamy texture and comes served in a pouch. This recipe features chicken as the only source of protein.

Like the previous recipe, this pate-style formula is higher in fat and a little lower in moisture than the gravy- and broth-based recipes. It still uses xanthan gum and locust bean gum for thickening, but the estimated carb content is still very low around 1% to 2%. There’s also some potato starch.

Generally speaking, we find all of these Weruva recipes fairly similar. We would like to see more natural sources for key nutrients but we can’t complain about the low carb content.

What Do Customers Think of Weruva Cat Food?

Weruva is a very popular brand, evidenced by the fact that it is widely available on both Amazon and Chewy, not to mention that many of their products have hundreds of ratings. The majority of Weruva cat food products on Chewy have 4 stars or higher, generally with at least 40 ratings.

Customers seem to like the Weruva brand, especially the variety of options they have to offer. Cat owners love the high moisture and low carb content of the recipes. Of the negative comments, we found several relating to the ratio of meat to gravy – customers wanted more meat.

How Much Does Weruva Cat Food Cost?

The price of cat food depends greatly on the quality of the ingredients and the way the food is manufactured. Canned food tends to be more expensive than dry food, largely because it is often higher in protein content than dry food which uses a lot of fillers.

Weruva only offers wet cat food products, so it may cost a little more to feed your cat exclusively with this brand than with a dry food brand.

That being said, Weruva offers a wide product selection with different price points. Their pouches tend to be the priciest, around $0.40/ounce, simply because they are smaller portions. Weruva canned foods range from $0.33 to $0.40 per ounce with the exception of the TruLuxe line which is at the higher end of the spectrum around $0.50/ounce.

To give you a better idea how Weruva stacks up against other cat food brands, here is a quick chart to show you some average prices:

Where Can You Buy Weruva Cat Food?

When shopping for cat food, many pet owners want a brand that’s easy to find. Weruva is always a convenient option whether you’re shopping online or in stores. The last thing you want to do is spend your time picking out a brand of cat food just to never see it again.

In stores, Weruva is only available at major retailers like Petco as well as smaller specialty pet stores. Online, you’ll find Weruva at Amazon and Chewy as well as Petco’s website and PetFlow. When shopping on Amazon, be sure to shop through Weruva’s brand page to ensure you’re not accidentally buying from an unauthorized reseller.

Our Final Thoughts: Is Weruva a Good Brand?

Overall, we appreciate the Weruva brand for their commitment to moisture-rich, low-carb cat foods. It’s nice to see a brand that follows the same approach with all of their products but still manages to offer a wide variety and keeps prices under $0.50 per ounce.

We love that every Weruva recipe starts with real protein and the use of carbohydrate ingredients is extremely limited. These foods are great for picky eaters because many recipes come with flavorful gravies and there are plenty of flavors to choose from. One thing we’ll note is that the calorie content of these formulas is fairly low, so you may end up feeding your cat several packages per day which can get expensive. Keep that in mind when comparing prices.

If you’re concerned about only using cat food made in the USA, it may be worth doing a little more research into BRC certification. In our research, we’ve come to find that a lot of the concern about ingredients not sourced from the US is a concern regarding quality. With all the certifications and standards Weruva has in place, we’re not too worried about it.

Generally speaking, we are fans of the Weruva brand. We tend to prefer canned food to dry food for the most part, especially for cats, and Weruva is a good option.
