How We Review Cat Food Brands
Your cat’s nutritional requirements are very different from your own. If you’re a first-time cat owner or just starting to do the research to choose a healthier food for your feline friend, you may not understand quite what that means. No worries – we’re here to help!
The first thing you need to know is that cats are obligate carnivores which means their bodies are designed to digest and derive nutrition most efficiently from animal sources.
We look for cat food recipes that list a real source of animal protein as the first ingredient – even better, two of the first three ingredients. Animal-based fats are important as well and any carbohydrates should be limited in quantity and come from digestible sources like whole grains and fresh veggies.
The quality of your cat’s diet plays a significant role in his overall health and long-term wellness, so it’s important to choose the best cat food you can consistently afford.
We don’t expect you to go out and buy the most expensive cat food on the market, but we do want you to understand the importance of feeding your cat something that will meet his nutritional needs. We do our best to honestly review every brand to provide you with the information you need to make a smart and healthy choice for your cat.
Here are some of the things we look for in a good cat food brand:
- High-quality animal protein as the first ingredient
- Rich in healthy animal fats (ex: chicken fat or salmon oil)
- Few to no carbohydrate ingredients (especially within the top 5)
- Limited number of main ingredients plus supplements
- No low-quality fillers, grains, or by-products
In addition to making sure any cat food brand we recommend is made with high-quality ingredients, we evaluate several other factors as well. We prefer brands that offer a wide variety of recipes and those that provide plenty of information about their ingredients and products. We also consider pricing and recalls as well as the availability of the brand as a whole.
Overview of the Only Natural Pet Brand
The Only Natural Pet brand was founded in Boulder, Colorado and remains headquartered there. The story of the brand goes back to 2002 when Marty Grosjean adopted a lab mix named Crinkles. Unfortunately, Crinkles had several health problems. That is, at least, until Marty started him on an all-natural, holistic diet and lifestyle.
When Crinkles started to thrive under his new lifestyle, Marty founded Only Natural Pet to help other pet parents achieve similar results for their furry friends. Today, Only Natural Pet partners with organizations like Wind, Eco-Cycle, Carbon Credit Capital, Green America, and more to help do what’s best for pets and for the planet.
Only Natural Pet has grown from a natural pet food company into an online pet product retailer. Not only do they offer their own recipes for premium pet foods, but they are also retailers for other top brands like The Honest Kitchen, Taste of the Wild, and Stella & Chewy’s.
When it comes to their own products, Only Natural Pet is committed to delivering high-quality nutrition through the use of all-natural ingredients. Their products are made in the United States, sourced sustainably, and held to the highest standards for quality.
What Kind of Cat Food Products Do They Offer?
Only Natural Pet offers a variety of pet food products not limited to dog and cat food. In fact, some of their recipes are designed for both dogs AND cats.
The primary cat foods Only Natural Pet has to offer are dry foods, freeze-dried foods, and wet foods. Their dry foods belong to two product lines Feline PowerFood and Feline Power Fusion. The second of these is similar to the first, only with the addition of freeze-dried bites of raw meat.
Only Natural Pet’s freeze-dried foods can be used as stand-alone meals or meal toppers. They also offer about a dozen wet food recipes made with premium animal proteins.

Product Recall History
Determining whether a cat good brand is worthy of your trust can be difficult, especially since every brand is out there to make a sale. Your job as a cat owner is to decide whether the brand is genuine in what they say and whether their products are actually of high quality.
Though the most important thing you can do is evaluate the information on the pet food label, it’s also a good idea to check the company’s recall history to get a better understanding of the brand.
Product recalls are designed to protect consumers from potentially harmful products and misleading advertising. Product recalls can happen for everything from minor labeling errors to major issues like contamination with food-borne pathogens. These recalls can be issued voluntarily by the company or by the FDA in response to customer complaints or independent testing.
Only Natural Pet has no recalls in its history. Though it isn’t enough to prove the quality of a brand that there aren’t any recalls, it is always a good thing to see evidence of commitment to quality and safety.

Ground Chicken With Bone, Chicken Heart, Chicken Liver, Sweet Potatoes, Broccoli, Apples, Raw Organic Goat’S Milk, Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, Herring Oil, Mixed Tocopherols (Preservative), D-Alpha Tocopherol.
This freeze-dried chicken recipe from Only Natural Pet is designed to be used as a complete meal or a meal topper. We like that it says this right on the package so there’s no confusion. Feeding this as a complete meal would be very expensive, but as a meal topper it adds a significant protein boost.
The first ingredient in this recipe is ground chicken with bone. As you might imagine, this includes both the meat and bone of the chicken which makes it an excellent source of protein and nutrients.
Not only is chicken the first ingredient, but chicken organs make up the next two ingredients as well: chicken heart and chicken liver. The remaining ingredients on the list are fresh veggies and fruits like sweet potatoes, broccoli, and apples with raw goat’s milk and apple cider vinegar.
You’ll see herring oil as the primary source of fat, a rich source of animal-based omega fatty acids, finished with a natural preservative. It’s important to note that this recipe doesn’t require heavy use of synthetic supplements – it relies on whole-food ingredients to deliver balanced nutrition.

Deboned Chicken, Turkey Meal, Chicken Meal, Garbanzo Beans, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Pea Protein, Pea Fiber, Tapioca Starch, Natural Flavor, Salmon Oil, Turkey Heart, Sweet Potatoes, Chicory Root Extract, Flaxseed, Carrots, Kale, Goat Milk, Blueberries, Vitamins [Vitamin E Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Niacin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid], Minerals [Zinc Proteinate, Calcium Carbonate, Iron Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Sodium Selenite, Calcium Iodate], Choline Chloride, Taurine, DL-Methionine, Dried Pumpkin, Dried Aspergillus oryzae Fermentation Extract (Source of Amylase), Dried Enterococcus faecium Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Aspergillus oryzae Fermentation Product (Source of Amylase, Lipase and Protease), Dried Aspergillus niger Fermentation Extract, Dried Trichoderma longibrachiatum Fermentation Extract, Dried Bacillus subtilis Fermentation Extract, Pineapple Stems (Source of Bromelain), Turmeric, New Zealand Green Mussels, Rosemary Extract.
This Power Fusion recipe is a combination of the first two products we reviewed, to a certain degree. It consists of high-protein kibble infused with freeze-dried raw bites of real meat.
The first ingredient in this recipe is deboned chicken, followed by both turkey meal and chicken meal. Again, we see pea protein a little later on the list but there’s an additional source of animal protein after it in the turkey heart.
Though high in protein, again we see the inclusion of legumes and plant-based proteins. We’re glad to see the inclusion of more nutritious fruits and veggies like sweet potatoes, carrots, and blueberries, but there is still a need for synthetic supplements to provide balanced nutrition.
We’ll also note the use of dried fermentation products here as probiotics. Though it’s not a bad idea to include them, the microorganisms are unlikely to survive the high heat extrusion process.

Though Only Natural Pet uses high-quality ingredients in their recipes, their dry foods were a little higher in carbohydrate than we usually like to see. This is true for many brands, however, and, in most cases, the brand’s wet food recipes are much lower in carb content.
This chicken and egg dinner contains an estimated carb content of about 5% which is much better. Plus, there’s no concentrated plant protein. Peas are still on the list, but it doesn’t likely make a significant contribution to the total protein content. We also don’t mind the addition of fresh salmon as the fourth ingredient and a supplemental source of animal protein.
In addition to plenty of protein, this recipe includes fresh fruits and veggies as well as plenty of healthy fats. The fiber content is low and the moisture content is high, both good things for cats.

Checking the ingredients list for this and the previous recipe, it’s easy to see they’re quite similar. Aside from the first five ingredients, many on the list are the same.
This formula features fresh whitefish as the primary ingredient with fresh salmon, tilapia, eggs, and clams as supplemental proteins. Peas are listed as well but, again, don’t likely make a significant contribution to the total protein content.
Again, we’re happy to see fresh fruits and vegetables included here and low fiber and high moisture content. Overall, these two canned foods seem to be pretty decent.
What Do Customers Think of Only Natural Pet Cat Food?
While Only Natural Pet isn’t the largest brand out there, their customers seem to be pleased. Based on Chewy reviews, the brand is well-received – most products have a 4-star rating or higher.
We checked some reviews for the most popular cat food products and many customers report that their cats love the products. Some cats disliked the texture of the freeze-dried food while others didn’t mind. Reviews for the PowerFood dry foods were overwhelmingly positive.
How Much Does Only Natural Pet Cat Food Cost?
You shouldn’t be surprised by now to hear that high-quality cat foods tend to cost more than cheap grocery store brands. Only Natural Pet is definitely not a low-quality brand, but what does that mean in terms of the price? We found it to be all over the place.
The most expensive cat food products from Only Natural Pet were the freeze-dried recipe. The chicken formula we reviewed was priced at $1.87 per ounce while the raw-infused poultry recipe was priced at $5.60 per pound. Broken down to price per ounce, the raw-infused recipe was actually a little bit cheaper than the wet foods which averaged $0.38/ounce.

Where Can You Buy Only Natural Pet Cat Food?
Only Natural Pet is unique in that it is not only a pet food brand but a pet food retailer. This company sells a variety of natural pet food products, including their own brand. If you’re looking for this brand in stores, unfortunately, you probably won’t find it. The best place to buy Only Natural Pet cat food is on Chewy or directly from the Only Natural Pet website.
Our Final Thoughts: Is Only Natural Pet a Good Brand?
Overall, we like the Only Natural Pet Brand, but the price is quite high for a brand that uses plant protein concentrates. We love that every recipe starts out with plenty of animal protein, but some of the dry food recipes make it tough to determine how much they actually make up of the total protein content. This isn’t a worry with the freeze-dried formula.
If you’re going to feed your cat Only Natural Pet, we recommend the freeze-dried recipe first. If that’s too expensive for your budget, consider one of the canned foods or the raw-infused Power Fusion formula.
