Your cat deserves the best, and that means a healthy diet made from high-quality ingredients. The thing you need to remember is that cats are obligate carnivores – they have a biological need for a high-protein diet and most of it should come from animal-based sources.

Overview Of The Abound Brand
Kroger is the second-largest retailer in the United States after Walmart but the nation’s largest supermarket by revenue. Founded in 1883 in Cincinnati, Ohio by Bernard Kroger, this company is ranked #20 on the Fortune 500 rankings of the largest US corporations by total revenue.
In 2014, Kroger announced the launch of its Abound pet food brand. Sold in Kroger stores, Abound pet food is manufactured by Sunshine Mills, a US-based company that also produces pet food for brands like Triumph and Evolve.
The Kroger website describes Abound as the result of “a great deal of time carefully selecting the highest-quality ingredients… and preparing them I a way that delivers optimum nutrition.”
Abound claims not to use fillers like corn, soy, and wheat or artificial additives or animal by-product meals. They say their products are made with “NO short cuts and NO compromises.”
While Abound is clear about some of the ingredients their products do NOT contain, it’s difficult to find out what they DO contain. Product listings on the website do not include a list of ingredients or even a picture of the back of the bag. We had to do some searching to find the product details elsewhere.
What Kind Of Cat Food Products Do They Offer?
Abound is an in-store pet food brand sold at Kroger supermarkets. They currently only offer 7 different products for cat food, including dry food and wet food varieties.
The Abound brand offers two dry cat foods, three wet cat foods, and a variety pack of their wet food varieties on the store website. Additional recipes may be available in stores, including grain-free cat food and cat dental treats.
Dry food is sold in 3.5-pound bags and individual cans are 5.5 ounces. The variety pack includes four each of 3-ounce cans of wet food. One dry food recipe is also available in a 13-pound bag.

Product Recall History
A product recall is issued when a problem is discovered with a product. In the pet food industry, recalls can be voluntarily issued by the brand or mandated by the FDA.
In many cases, recalls are due to formulation issues or contamination, though they sometimes happen for labeling problems.
Product recalls are more common in companies that outsource their manufacturing. Facilities that produce pet food in mass quantities for major brands have more room for error. Keep in mind, however, that a product recall doesn’t necessarily mean the brand is low-quality.
Based on our research, the Abound brand has only had one product recall to date which, considering the brand only launched in 2014, isn’t surprising.
Here is an overview of Abound pet food recalls:
- December 2018 (elevated vitamin D levels) – Kroger issued a voluntary recall for Abound dry dog food products due to elevated levels of vitamin D that were reportedly making some dogs ill.
Though Abound has had one product recall in its history, it only affected their dog food products. We weren’t able to determine if the same manufacturer makes their cat food, unfortunately.

Because it was difficult to find information about the ingredients in Abound foods, we were unsure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised, however, to find that both dry food recipes are made with real animal proteins and whole grains.
This formula starts strong with deboned salmon as the first ingredient and chicken meal as the second. Turkey meal and salmon meal provide supplemental sources of animal protein with no by-products or unnamed meat meals. There is, however, animal fat which doesn’t come from a named source.
Fresh fruits and veggies provide natural sources for key nutrients, though the formula does contain a significant number of synthetic supplements as well. All in all, the formula appears to offer decent quality nutrition and it is free from fillers and artificial additives.
